Laura Johnson is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Mississippi, College of Liberal Arts. She is also affiliated with the Psychological Services Center and teaches in the Clinical Ph.D. program as well as the Croft Institute for International Studies. Her work bridges clinical, multicultural, and environmental psychology with a strong international focus.

Her interdisciplinary approach integrates psychology with ecology and peace studies, particularly through participatory methods like photovoice and action research. She explores how youth engage with community, nature, and culture, and how intercultural relations shape mental health and environmental action.
Her scientific work has been supported by prestigious awards including two Fulbright grants and two National Geographic Conservation Trust grants, reflecting the global impact of her research. She has also contributed to policy and practice through grants from IIE and partnerships with international organizations.

Dr. Johnson actively mentors students, supervises research in the Clinical Ph.D. program, and has co-founded initiatives such as the Cultural Connections project for international students and the Lambda support group for GLBT students. She has been involved in international service as a Peace Corps volunteer and continues to collaborate with NGOs in Tanzania, including Hope Revival Orphan and Vulnerable Children NGO and the Rafiki Development Fund.
Her leadership extends to professional service, including chairing the long-range strategic planning committee of APA’s International Division (Division 52), serving on editorial boards for journals like Intercultural Relations and Ecopsychology, and reviewing for International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Consultation, and Practice.
