Julia Calvert is a Lecturer in international political economy at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh. She holds a PhD in Political Science with a specialization in political economy (2016). Her research examines the political economy of investment treaties in Latin America, focusing on government responses to legal claims by foreign investors and regulatory capacity protection.
Her research interests center on international relations, political economy dynamics, and the intersection of law and policy in developing economies. She investigates how governments navigate investment treaties while preserving regulatory autonomy.
She mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students and teaches courses in international relations, Latin American politics, and international political economy. Previously, she completed graduate studies at Carleton University where she benefited from a collegial academic environment.
