Dr. Julia Calvert is a Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. Her research examines how emerging economies shape global economic governance, with particular focus on investment treaty reforms and sustainable development frameworks.
Research encompasses:
- Reform of international investment agreements
- Legal tools for public interest defense in arbitration
- Policy space for sustainable development
- Leadership psychology in resource taxation
- Investment facilitation frameworks
Her publications analyze investor-state dispute resolution mechanisms, treaty politics in Latin America, and ownership structures in arbitration cases. Recent work explores personality factors in political economy and investment facilitation in BRICS nations.
Currently leading projects on international organizations' role in investment law reform, examining OECD, UNCTAD and UNCITRAL. Serves as Programme Chair for ISA's International Political Economy Section and convener of BISA's IPE Working Group.
