Andrew Newcombe is a Professor and Associate Dean (Academic and Student Relations) at the University of Victoria's Faculty of Law. He joined the faculty in 2002 after practicing law with Swinton & Co. (now Miller Thomson) in Vancouver and working in Paris at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's International Arbitration group. His teaching focuses on International Arbitration, International Trade Law, and Contracts. As a leading scholar in international investment law, he founded the ita research website in 2004 and co-authored Law and Practice of Investment Treaties: Standards of Treatment. His research emphasizes sustainable development in investment law frameworks.
Education: BA Honours (King's College, 1992), LLB (University of Victoria, 1995), LLM (University of Toronto, 1999).
Research interests include investment treaty arbitration, regulatory expropriation, and integrating sustainable development into international investment agreements. He advises governments and non-state actors while maintaining roles as arbitrator and counsel in international arbitrations. His work appears in Sustainable Development in World Investment Law and as an editor for Investor-State Law Guide.
Professional activities span academic contributions, policy advising, and direct participation in international arbitration proceedings. He is a prominent voice in modernizing investment treaty practices and addressing emerging challenges in investor-state relations.
