Joseph Mannard is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religious Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). He holds a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park, and additional degrees from the University of South Florida and Manatee Junior College. His research focuses on 19th-century U.S. social history, particularly American Catholicism, antebellum benevolence, and women’s roles in religious institutions. He is a leading scholar on Roman Catholic nuns in antebellum America, examining topics like convent life, health care, and education.
Mannard’s work has been recognized with the Catholic Press Association’s Best Article Award (2018) for his analysis of convent expansion in antebellum America. He is currently researching a biography of Ann Gertrude Wightt, an escaped nun, supported by a 2019 grant from the Cushwa Center at the University of Notre Dame. His office is located in Leonard Hall, Room 304, with face-to-face hours Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. and remote hours until 4:30 p.m.
His research interests include the intersection of religion, gender, and social reform, with publications exploring anti-Catholic sentiment, convent scandals, and the role of Catholic nuns in shaping early American communities. His articles frequently bridge historical narrative with cultural analysis, emphasizing marginalized voices in religious history.
