Joe Bookman is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Media Studies at Beloit College. He joined the faculty in 2017 and teaches courses such as Intro to Film Art, Directing Fiction Film, and Media and the Anthropocene. His research focuses on filmmaking, podcasting, media production, and media theory, with a particular interest in the intersection of technology and creative expression.
Bookman is an award-winning screenwriter whose work has been featured at international film festivals, including the Cinéfondation selection at Cannes. He has also contributed to publications like Matador Network, The Teaching Professor, and Zeal: A Journal for the Liberal Arts.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on creativity, collaboration, and intellectual exploration through media production and theory. Beyond academia, he has worked as a podcaster, story development consultant, and film programmer for the Slamdance Film Festival.
