Janet Ying

Janet Ying is an Associate Professor of String Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. She is a founding member of the renowned Ying Quartet, established in 1992. Her career combines artistic excellence with innovative community engagement, exemplified by her residency in Jesup, Iowa, where she integrated concert music into everyday community life. She holds the Naumburg Chamber Music Award (1993) and a Grammy Award-winning collaboration with the Turtle Island String Quartet.

Education: Studied violin under notable mentors including Donald Weilerstein, William Preucil, Almita and Roland Vamos, Sonja Foster, and Yuko Nasu.

Research & Performance: Focuses on interdisciplinary arts through projects like 'No Boundaries' at Symphony Space, blending music with poetry, dance, and visual arts. She actively commissions new works via the LifeMusic project, collaborating with composers such as Kevin Puts and Chen Yi. Her recordings explore classical repertoires and experimental fusions.
