Gary Wurtz

Gary Wurtz, DMA is the Dean of the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin University (SFA), where he has spent his entire 30+ year career. He previously served as Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Band (1992–2016), Director of the School of Music (2016–2021), and Interim Dean (2021–2022).

• Education: Doctor of Musical Arts (University of North Texas, 2001), Master of Music Education (University of North Texas, 1987), Bachelor of Music Education (West Texas A&M, 1985)
• Current role focuses on advocating for faculty/staff/students and problem-solving in administration.

His research and professional interests span Music Education, Trumpet Performance, and Jazz Studies, with a career-long commitment to preparing students for impactful roles in the arts and education. He received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2011.
