Christopher Ali is the Pioneers Chair and Professor of Telecommunications at Penn State University's Bellisario College of Communications. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2013) and specializes in media policy, telecommunications regulation, broadband access, and qualitative research methods. His work focuses on bridging policy and community narratives, particularly in rural broadband deployment and digital equity. He has authored four books, including Farm Fresh Broadband: The Politics of Rural Connectivity, and frequently testifies on broadband policy before U.S. legislative bodies.
Ali's research integrates ethnographic and participatory methods to understand the human impact of technological policies. He serves on advisory boards for organizations like CENIC and has held fellowships at the Benton Institute and World Economic Forum. His work emphasizes the intersection of critical political economy and local policy, addressing challenges in public media sustainability and community-driven solutions to connectivity gaps.
Recent projects include investigating 'broadband stories' to influence policy and analyzing the Affordable Connectivity Program's adoption.
