Axel Buether

Axel Buether serves as Professor in the Department of Design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, a position held since 2007 following a Visiting Professorship (2006-2007). Previously, he worked as a Research Assistant at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (1999-2005).

His academic foundation includes a diploma in Architecture and minor in Philosophy from TU Berlin (1992-1997), supplemented by guest studies at UDK Berlin and London's Architectural Association. Early vocational training as a stonemason and stone sculptor (1983-1985) preceded freelance restoration work (1985-1992).

Buether's research centers on the integration of color, light, and space within artistic design frameworks. His expertise spans architectural theory, spatial scenography, and exhibition design, emphasizing philosophical underpinnings of visual perception. The practice "arch+mind – Architecture and Media" (founded 1997) operationalizes these concepts through architectural projects, interior design, and spatial installations that interrogate boundaries between physical and perceptual environments.

Active in university governance, he participates in Department Council for Art, Design Department Council, and Academic Senate meetings through 2026. His leadership in the "arch+mind" studio drives experimental approaches to spatial design, particularly evident in current exhibitions like "Formations of a border" exploring GDR divisional architecture. Committee involvement in Working Groups Against Right-Wing Populism and Equal Opportunities Commission reflects his commitment to inclusive academic culture.
