Anna Yates

Anna Yates is a Researcher at Newcastle University's School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, pursuing a PhD focused on the social geographies of women’s safety in Stockholm. Her work investigates intersections of fear, urban design, and residential segregation through an intersectional lens. She is supervised by Professor Rachel Pain and Dr. Georgiarna Varna, and affiliated with the Geographies of Social Change research cluster.

Yates holds an MA in Human Geography Research Methods (Newcastle University) and a BA in Geography from the University of Cambridge. Her research employs innovative methods like walking interviews and relief mapping to explore how gender, race, class, and spatial environments shape perceptions of safety in diverse Stockholm neighborhoods.

Her publications and presentations highlight trends in urban criminology, including the paradox of low fear among privileged groups and its implications for marginalized communities. Notable outputs include studies on CPTED frameworks and the gendered dimensions of urban safety in Husby and beyond.
