Ali Abedi is the Associate Vice President for Research and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maine. He leads the UMaine Artificial Intelligence and Space initiatives. Previously, he served as a visiting Associate Professor at the University of Maryland and Guest Researcher at NIST, with a NASA Faculty Fellowship in 2016. He directs the WiSe-Net Lab, focusing on wireless communications, sensor networks for structural monitoring, space exploration, and biomedical applications. His research spans sleep sensing systems for neurological disorders, medical diagnostics, and sensor technology innovation.
Education: PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (University of Waterloo, 2004), MSc (Sharif University of Technology, 1998), BSc (Sharif University of Technology, 1996).
Research interests include biomedical signal analysis for early disease detection (e.g., Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injury), sensor network design for healthcare and infrastructure monitoring, and AI-driven medical technologies. His recent work emphasizes wearable sensors and machine learning for clinical diagnostics.
He holds a Senior Member status in IEEE and serves as Vice President of IEEE Council on Radio Frequency Identification (CRFID). He is also a Board Member of the Maine Space Corporation.
