Alex Lopez

Alex Lopez is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at the College of Arts and Media, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He holds an MFA in Sculpture from Alfred University (1998) and has taught at Trinity University and The University of Texas in San Antonio prior to joining SIU.

Lopez’s artistic practice merges scientific and anthropological methodologies, creating works that interrogate social patterns during child development stages. His installations and sculptures oscillate between factual and confabulatory narratives, challenging perceptions of compromise and conformity through a contradictory yet holistic lens.

His work has been exhibited in over 90 prominent venues, including the Illinois State Museum (Chicago), Christie’s (New York), ArtPace (San Antonio), and the Blanton Museum of Art (Austin). Reviews of his work have appeared in Art in America, Artlies Magazine, and Art Papers.
