Alex Lopez

Alex Lopez is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU). He holds an MFA in Sculpture from Alfred University (1998) and has taught at Trinity University and the University of Texas, both in San Antonio, before joining SIU. His work spans sculpture, video, and installation art, blending scientific and anthropological approaches to explore social patterns in child development, provoking reflections on conformity and compromise.

His exhibitions include over 90 shows at institutions like the Illinois State Museum, Blanton Museum of Art, and Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, Artlies Magazine, and Art Papers.

Lopez’s practice merges factual and narrative elements to create unsettling yet cohesive critiques of societal norms. He is affiliated with SIU’s Art and Design program and can be contacted at alxlpz@siu.edu.
