He previously held the Chair of the Department of Neurochemistry at Stockholm University (2005–2013) and has affiliations with The Scripps Research Institute, USA, and Ljubljana University, Slovenia.
- PhD in Organic Chemistry (Bioorganic Chemistry), Tartu University/Institute of Chemistry, Estonia (1980)
- PhD in Biochemistry (Neurochemistry), Tartu University/Stockholm University (1993)
Langel’s research focuses on peptide chemistry, neurochemistry, and molecular neurobiology, particularly exploring cell-penetrating peptides, neuropeptide receptors, and their roles in Galanin and NPY systems. His work bridges biochemistry and neurological research, with applications in drug design and therapeutics.
He has served on editorial boards of journals such as Drug Design Reviews-Online and the International Journal of Peptide Research and Therapeutics. Langel is recognized for his contributions as a Fellow member of the International Neuropeptide Society and for receiving the White Star Order from Estonia.
- White Star Order, 4th class (2001)
- Member, Academia Europaea (2013)
Langel has supervised 31 PhD students to completion and currently mentors 15 ongoing PhD candidates. He has refereed over 300 manuscripts for journals and served as a referee for major international funding bodies including NIH (USA), INSERM (France), and MRC (UK).
