Tiit Land (b. 1964) is currently the Rector of Tallinn University of Technology since 2020, and previously served as Rector of Tallinn University (2011–2020). He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Stockholm University (1994). His academic career includes roles as Professor at Tallinn University (2007–2011) and researcher/lecturer at Stockholm University (1999–2006). He conducted postdoctoral research at the NIH (USA, 1994–1999) and earned his MSc from Tartu University (1989).
Research focuses on iron regulation, oxidative stress, and neurodegenerative diseases. Key areas include Alzheimer's disease mechanisms, prion-associated iron toxicity, and signal transduction pathways in neuroinflammation. His work bridges neurochemistry and biochemistry, with emphasis on molecular mechanisms linking iron metabolism to neurological disorders.
Publications (39 total) span neurochemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, and molecular biology. Recent work includes studies on cardiovascular risk factors in Estonia and microglial cell signaling. Supervised 9 PhD/MSc students, including Kristin Part (2016) and Margit Kaldmäe (2015).
- Administrative roles: Director of Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (2008–2011), Director of Studies at Stockholm University (2003–2006).
- Lab affiliations: Conducted research in neurochemistry and neurotoxicology at Stockholm University and Tallinn University.
