Prof. Jaak Järv is a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Science and Technology. He holds dual Honorary Doctorates from Uppsala and Kuopio Universities and is a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and Academia Europea. His career spans over four decades with roles including Deputy Pro-rector for Research (1983-1991), Head of the Institute of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry, and currently leads the Chair of Organic Chemistry.
Education:
- PhD in Organic Chemistry (1976, University of Tartu)
- Doctor of Chemical Sciences (1990, Moscow State University)
Research Interests: Focuses on physical organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and enzyme kinetics. Key areas include neurotransmitter receptor mechanisms, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR), and design of biomimetic compounds. His work bridges computational modeling and experimental synthesis, with notable contributions to dopamine transporter ligand studies and enzyme-catalyzed reaction pathways.
Awards:
- 2009: White Star Order III (Estonia's highest honor)
- 2000: Estonian National Science Award
- 1996: Honorary Medical Doctorate from Uppsala University
Leadership & Service: Served as Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry (1998-2003), Editor-in-Chief of Proceedings of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, and currently chairs the Estonian Academy Publisher Board. Active in multiple international scientific societies including the European Peptide Society and FEBS.
Teaching: Develops curricula in bioorganic chemistry and organic chemistry at undergraduate/graduate levels, including digital educational tools for Estonian high schools.
