Jaak Aaviksoo is a prominent Estonian academic and political leader. He served as Professor of Optics and Spectroscopy at the University of Tartu from 1992 to 2015, and as Rector of the University of Tartu (1998–2007) and Tallinn University of Technology (2015–present). He held ministerial roles including Minister of Education and Research (2011–2014), Minister of Defence (2007–2011), and multiple terms in the Estonian Parliament. His academic career includes guest professorships at institutions like the Max Planck Institute and Osaka University.
