Øyvind Halaas is Professor of Nanomedicine at NTNU's Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine. His research develops microphysiological systems (MPS) to model immune system functions, focusing on immune-on-chip technologies for cancer immunotherapy enhancement and infectious disease research.
Core research themes:
- Lymph node-on-chip for immune cell interaction studies
- Photochemical antigen delivery for cancer vaccination
- Intracellular pathogen-host interactions
- Advanced imaging of host-pathogen systems
- Neuromodulation platforms
His lab creates engineered microenvironments to study immune cell behaviors in real-time, develop immunotherapy screening platforms, and investigate infection mechanisms. Technologies include microfluidic systems for studying T cell-dendritic cell interactions and photochemical internalization strategies for antigen delivery.
He maintains collaborations with clinical researchers and international partners in immunology and bioengineering.
