Åsa Arping is a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Gothenburg, holding dual roles in academic leadership and literary research. She specializes in 19th-century literature, reception studies, and contemporary Swedish prose focusing on class representation. Her work intersects gender studies and intersectionality, analyzing how class interacts with gender and ethnicity in post-welfare societies. Arping has led major research projects such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Translation, Reception, Transformation and Doing Class: Intersectional Encounters in Swedish Contemporary Fiction, funded by prestigious institutions like the Swedish Research Council.
Her academic career includes over 25 years of teaching in literature and cultural studies, alongside editorial roles in journals like Kriterium and Samlaren. Awards include the Schück Prize (2024) and Moa Prize (2022). Arping’s publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles addressing literary criticism, canon formation, and critical editing. She actively participates in national and international networks, advocating for academic freedom and interdisciplinary approaches to humanities education.
Current initiatives include strategic leadership at the Faculty of Humanities and collaborative research on global reception of literary classics. Her research bridges historical and contemporary analyses, emphasizing literature’s role in societal critique and identity formation.
