Álvaro Luís Lima is an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida's College of the Arts, specializing in Art History with a focus on African Art. He holds affiliate positions in the Center for African Studies and the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research. His research examines modern/contemporary African art through interdisciplinary lenses of cultural studies and postcolonial theory.
Research interests span socialist aesthetics in Mozambique, decolonial art practices, animal symbolism in post-apartheid art, and gender/queer narratives. His work analyzes how art reflects political transitions, cultural identity, and historical memory across Africa.
Publications explore trends in socialist and post-socialist African art, with recurring themes of ideological transformation, cultural hybridity, and resistance. Recent articles critically engage with the legacies of colonialism and socialism.
