Prof. Falk Kiefer is a Medical Director of the Department of Addictive Behaviour and Addiction Medicine and holds a Professorship in Addiction Research at Heidelberg University's Medical Faculty Mannheim. His research focuses on developing novel treatments for addictive behaviors through neuroimaging, genetics, neuroendocrinology, and psychosocial/environmental factors. He leads the Research Group (RG) Translational Addiction Research at the Central Institute of Mental Health. Grants & Projects: Co-spokesperson for DFG CRC/TRR 265 (2019–2023) on addiction mechanisms and interventions. BMBF-funded projects: SySMedSUDs (2019–2023), Target-OXY (2019–2023), and AERIAL (2015–2020). EU Horizon2020 project Sybil-AA (2016–2019) modeling alcohol addiction pathophysiology. Research Subprojects: Stress-related predictors for craving/relapse (A03). Neurofeedback in cue reactivity (C04). Neurobehavioral signatures in adolescents (AERIAL Subproject 1). His work bridges basic and clinical research, emphasizing personalized treatments through biomarkers like oxytocin, ghrelin, and leptin. He has pioneered studies on neural reactivity to addictive cues and pharmacological interventions targeting memory reconsolidation.
