Dr Aleida Mendes Borges is a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL) and a Visiting Lecturer at the African Leadership Centre, King's College London. She is affiliated with the School of Global Affairs, Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and contributes to interdisciplinary research on gender, politics, and decoloniality in Africa and the Global South. Research Fellow, GIWL, King's College London Visiting Lecturer, African Leadership Centre Member, Research Ethics Committee (King's College London) Convenor, African Politics Specialist Group (PSA UK) She holds a PhD in Social Science from King's College London, an MSc in Research for International Development from SOAS, an LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of Rouen, and a BA in Law and French from the University of Hertfordshire. Her research centers on intersectional and decolonial feminism, women's grassroots leadership, gender and development, and political participation in Lusophone Africa. She investigates how power imbalances shape gendered outcomes in organizations, policy, and social movements. Her work emphasizes ethical research practices and amplifying Global South epistemologies. The 15 most recent articles reveal a strong focus on gender equality in Africa, particularly Cabo Verde, with recurring themes of political representation, pandemic impacts, youth engagement, and inclusive governance. Her scholarship bridges academic research and policy, often through collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. SSPP Impact Prize Award 2023 KingsCAT Recognition (2024) Dr Borges is actively involved in research projects such as QUALREP (quality of women’s political representation) and studies on STEM gender equality in Kenya. She mentors PhD students and teaches postgraduate modules on inclusive organizations and decoloniality. She is also engaged in public outreach, media contributions, and convening academic seminars and panels. She leads the GIWL Changemakers Programme and contributes to research groups including the Africa Research Group, Children, Youth, Peace and the Arts (CYPA), and KingsCAT for social media analysis.
