Emmanuel Alloa is a Full Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Letters and Humanities, University of Fribourg. His academic career spans multiple international institutions, having held positions at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University, Universidad San Nicolás de Hidalgo in Mexico, UFMG in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and the IKKM at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Alloa earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Paris I-Panthéon and the Freie Universität Berlin through a cotutelle arrangement in 2009. His academic journey includes teaching positions in plastic arts at Paris 8, the International College of Philosophy, postdoctoral research at the National Research Pole eikones in Basel, and a position as Maître de conférences in philosophy at the University of St. Gallen. His research focuses on aesthetics, philosophy of art, image theories, phenomenology, French philosophy, media and technology philosophy, cultural theories, and social and political philosophy. Alloa's work critically examines transparency as a contemporary metaphor, the phenomenology of visual media, and the intersection of embodiment and image theory. His approach combines historical analysis with contemporary philosophical concerns, particularly regarding the political dimensions of visual culture and media. Alloa's extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on the phenomenology of images and media, with particular attention to transparency as a cultural and political concept. His recent work explores the performative aspects of images, the relationship between embodiment and visual experience, and the historical development of image theory from philosophical perspectives.
