Associate Professor Andrea Griffin is a Wildlife Conservation Scientist and Behavioral Ecologist at the University of Newcastle’s School of Environmental and Life Sciences. Her work focuses on understanding how animals adapt to environmental changes, with pioneering research on predator recognition training for captive-bred animals and cognition in invasive species like the common myna. She leads interdisciplinary projects using advanced technologies such as motus telemetry and acoustic AI for shorebird conservation and invasive species management. Education: PhD in Zoology from Macquarie University. Key research interests include animal behavior, conservation biology, and the cognitive mechanisms underlying ecological invasions. She has authored over 100 journal articles, with a strong focus on behavioral ecology and conservation strategies. Research highlights include demonstrating that marsupials can learn predator avoidance through observation and showing that cognitive traits in invasive species drive their ecological success. Her work on myna behavior has informed trapping strategies to mitigate their impact. She leads a national acoustic monitoring AI system collaboration with engineers and computer scientists. Recognition includes awards for supervision excellence, women in research, and leadership. She advises WWF as an Eminent Scientist and collaborates with artists and policymakers to promote conservation awareness.
