Dr. Joel Stern is a Lecturer in Media at RMIT University's School of Media and Communication, with a focus on sound studies, experimental music, and curatorial practice. He holds a PhD in Curatorial Practice from Monash University (2020). As a researcher, curator, and artist, Stern explores the intersections of sound, technology, and culture through projects like Machine Listening and his tenure as Artistic Director of Liquid Architecture (2013–2022). His work addresses themes of sonic control, automation, and resistance through exhibitions, publications, and collaborative research initiatives. Stern has curated major exhibitions such as This Hideous Replica (2024) and Eavesdropping (2018–2019), and his teaching includes courses on sound futures, speculative design, and eco-technological approaches to listening. Research interests span sound art, art and AI, critical data studies, and platform studies. He has held roles as a peer assessor for the Australia Council for the Arts and contributed to initiatives like the Sound Art and Auditory Cultures Lab at RMIT. Stern’s creative work includes performances, installations, and browser-based instruments, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and community formation. Supervision projects focus on sonic methodologies in contested environments, digital oceanography, and the transmutation of sound experiences. His teaching history includes Queensland University of Technology and Monash University, where he taught sound studies, project-based learning, and music studios.
