Anna Friz is an Associate Professor of Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her work focuses on experimental radio art, sound design, and interdisciplinary media practices. She has received prestigious awards including the 2024 Karl Sczuka Prize for Radio and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Friz's research explores themes like urban soundscapes, media obsolescence, and the intersection of technology and cultural expression.
Education highlights include an exchange program in West Germany during the 1980s and ongoing collaborations with Austrian Radio's ORF Kunstradio since 1999. Her recent project Revenant addresses themes of metamorphosis and grief through radio art.
Research interests span experimental media, radio ontology, and sound art's role in cultural critique. Notable works include Vacant City Radio (2006) and Becoming Radio (2008). She has presented work in over 25 countries and recently exhibited at Bolivia's Sonandes Festival.
