Professor Xiaoqin Li is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at The University of Texas at Austin, where she joined in January 2007. She serves as IRG 2 Co-Leader and Faculty Investigator for IRG 2, focusing on quantum-scale research critical to next-generation electronics. Her academic journey began at Beijing Normal University, continued with graduate studies at the University of Michigan where she specialized in experimental laser physics, and included postdoctoral research at JILA in Colorado—a leading optics institute. She credits her advisor's mentorship and fascination with laser shows for shaping her experimental physics path. Research Interests: Professor Li investigates quantum electron dynamics using ultrafast laser pulses (10 -13 seconds) to probe and control material properties at atomic scales. Her work addresses the impending quantum challenges of transistor miniaturization—where devices shrinking toward atomic dimensions will require mastery of electron behavior. She emphasizes physics' universal elegance, noting how conservation laws operate identically from subatomic particles to astronomical systems. Her group leverages lasers' non-invasive, phase-coherent properties to capture electron motion like a high-speed camera, treating lab work as daily scientific puzzle-solving. As leader of the Li Research Group, she mentors students in experimental quantum physics while bridging fundamental science with technological frontiers. Her vision connects femtosecond laser techniques to future electronics that transcend classical transistor limits, driven by the conviction that controlling quantum dynamics holds keys to 21st-century innovation.
