Raymond L. Brock serves as a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University's College of Natural Science, where he has been a faculty member since 1982 and chaired the department from 1992-2000. A leading figure in particle physics, he contributes to major international collaborations including ATLAS at CERN and DØ at Fermilab.
His academic credentials include:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Iowa State University
- M.S. in Physics and Philosophy of Science, Northern Illinois University
- Ph.D. in Theoretical and Experimental Elementary Particle Physics, Carnegie-Mellon University
Brock's research integrates theoretical frameworks with experimental methodologies in particle physics, specializing in detector construction and physics analysis for high-energy experiments. His work with CERN's ATLAS collaboration and Fermilab's DØ experiment has advanced fundamental understanding of subatomic particles through large-scale international projects.
His scientific recognition includes:
- APS Fellowship
- Department of Physics and Astronomy Osgood Award for Undergraduate Teaching
- MSU Distinguished Faculty Award
- MSU Teacher-Scholar Award
Brock has mentored dozens of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers while securing continuous National Science Foundation funding for MSU's particle physics program. His leadership extends to chairing the American Physical Society's Division of Particles and Fields (2010) and the U.S. ATLAS Institutional Board (2014-2015).
He remains actively engaged with the ATLAS and DØ collaborations, driving detector development and data analysis initiatives within these major international particle physics teams.
