Prof Julian Luxford is a Professor in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the Centre for Ancient Environmental Studies and the Institute of Medieval Studies. His research focuses on medieval art and architecture, manuscript studies, and monastic history, particularly the Augustinian, Benedictine, and Carthusian orders. He supervises PhD students Amy Elizabeth Hopkins, Lucy Beall Lott, and Sidney Wilson. His expertise spans medieval aesthetics, art across England, Scotland, and Northern Europe (c.1200-1500), and the history of the book. Recent publications include studies on Carthusian manuscripts, medieval sermons, and funerary architecture. He has contributed to projects such as the Corpus of Scottish Medieval Parish Churches and edited volumes on Carthusian art. Prof Luxford’s work engages with sustainable development goals through cultural heritage preservation. He actively participates in academic networks, delivering invited lectures on topics like medieval sculpture and monastic manuscripts. His research outputs include books, peer-reviewed articles, and chapters in edited volumes, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary medieval studies.
