Greg Wahlert is a Lecturer and Shirley Tucker Curator of Biodiversity Collections at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He manages the UCSB Natural History Collections housed at the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Resilience (CCBER). As a plant systematist, his research focuses on floristic inventory in Colombia's Western Cordillera, taxonomy of Lupinus in California, and studies of Violaceae and Malvaceae families, particularly in Madagascar. He teaches botany and curation courses in the Ecological, Evolutionary, and Marine Biology (EEMB) and Environmental Studies (ENVS) departments. Wahlert holds a Ph.D. in Environmental and Plant Biology from Ohio University. His work combines genomic and morphological evidence to address taxonomic challenges, such as clarifying species complexes in Lupinus and Rinorea. Collaborations include projects on African and Malagasy flora, resulting in numerous species descriptions and phylogenetic analyses. His courses include Flora and Vegetation of California and Ethnobotany and Economic Botany . He mentors students in natural history collections curation, emphasizing hands-on training with specimens. His research spans biodiversity conservation, phylogeography, and the integration of digital tools for phenological studies. Wahlert’s contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed articles on plant systematics, with a focus on understudied taxa in the Americas and Madagascar. He actively engages in fieldwork, herbarium curation, and international collaborations to advance botanical knowledge.
