Paul Matthews is the Edmond and Lily Safra Professor of Translational Neuroscience and Therapeutics at Imperial College London, where he has served as Head of the Division of Brain Sciences since 2012. He previously held leadership roles at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), including Vice-President for Imaging and Neuroscience Development, and was a Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Oxford. His work bridges academia and industry, focusing on integrative medicine and translational neuroscience. BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences (Chemistry), St. Edmund Hall, University of Oxford (1974-78) D. Phil. in Biochemistry, University of Oxford (1978-82) MD in Neurology, Stanford University School of Medicine (1983-86) Paul Matthews specializes in translational neuroscience, with expertise spanning neuroimaging (MRI, PET), neurology, and drug development. His research explores biomarkers, brain plasticity, and neuroinflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis, integrating genetics and large-scale population studies to advance therapeutic strategies. His honors include election as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2014), the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (2008), and prestigious awards such as the MRC Clinical Research Professor (2000-08) and NIHR Senior Investigator (2015). He has also been recognized for excellence in neuroimaging and clinician-scientist training. Matthews has mentored through honorary and adjunct roles at institutions including the University of Edinburgh, University of Maastricht, and McGill University. His career combines academic research with leadership in pharmaceutical development at GSK, emphasizing clinical imaging and neuroscience innovation.
