C.J. (Lotte) van ter Toolen is a Lecturer and PhD candidate at the University of Groningen's Department for History of Art and Architecture within the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on Early Modern Italian art (1400-1600), particularly tomb monuments and their role in shaping artists' reputations and social status in 15th- and 16th-century Rome. She holds a supervisory team including Prof. Bart Ramakers and Dr. Jan de Jong. Her doctoral project, funded by the NWO PhDs in the Humanities Programme (2018-2023), examines how tomb monuments served as memory sites to construct artists' identities and elevate the visual arts' status from craft to creative profession. She has published on tombs of artists like Andrea Bregno and Cristoforo della Rovere, analyzing their cultural and historical significance. Van ter Toolen's work bridges art history with memory studies, emphasizing how material culture reflects socio-cultural values. Her recent 2024 collaborative book on the Anonimo Magliabechiano manuscript showcases her expertise in textual and visual analysis. She actively participates in academic networks through platforms like Academia.edu and LinkedIn.
