Dr. Yuri Totoev is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering (Civil Engineering) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He specializes in structural engineering with a focus on masonry systems, seismic performance, and energy dissipation mechanisms. His career spans over three decades, including international collaborations with institutions such as the Kiev State Technical University and the Slovenian National Research Institute for Civil Engineering. Dr. Totoev holds a PhD and Master of Engineering Science from Kiev State Technical University. His research expertise encompasses brick products, dynamics of structures, finite difference methods, plate and shell mechanics, and unsaturated moisture flow. He has led major research programs, including pioneering work on semi-interlocking masonry (SIM) systems designed to enhance earthquake resistance in buildings. His publications span 85 conference papers and 40 journal articles, focusing on experimental and numerical studies of masonry behavior under seismic and static loads. Notable contributions include investigations into SIM panels’ out-of-plane capacity, confined masonry systems, and the application of digital image correlation (DIC) for displacement analysis. He has secured over $318,000 in research grants and supervised 11 PhD/Master’s students. Dr. Totoev has received prestigious awards such as the 2007 Engineering Excellence Award (Engineers Australia) and the 2001 Dr. R.G. Drysdale Award. He currently contributes to the Centre for Infrastructure Performance and Reliability, advancing innovations in structural resilience and sustainable construction materials.
