Professor Shikaripur Narayanarao Sridhar is the SUNY Distinguished Service Professor and holds dual roles as Professor of Linguistics and India Studies in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University, as well as Founding Director of the Mattoo Center for India Studies. He has been a faculty member since 1980. His academic journey includes a B.A. (Honors, First Class First Rank) and M.A. in English Literature from Bangalore University (1969–1971), followed by a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois (1980), focusing on cognitive universals of sentence production. His research expertise spans bilingualism, multilingualism, second language acquisition, Dravidian linguistics, and World Englishes. He has authored three books, including Kannada: Descriptive Grammar and Cognition and Sentence Production , and co-edited seminal volumes like Language in South Asia . His current projects include translating the Kannada Mahabharata into English for Harvard University Press. Professor Sridhar’s accolades include Senior Faculty Fellowships from the American Institute of Indian Studies, NEH recognition, and the SUNY Distinguished Service Professor title (2011). He has organized international conferences (e.g., IAWE 25) and founded institutions like the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (2002) and the Center for India Studies (1997). He collaborates with his wife, Professor Kamal Sridhar, in research and university leadership.
