Giulio Taglialatela

Dr. Giulio Taglialatela is Professor and Lawrence J. Del Papa Distinguished Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he serves as Vice President and Director of the Brain Health Institute. His NIH-funded research focuses on molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease, tau pathology, and brain resilience pathways.

Research Focus: His laboratory investigates synaptic vulnerability to proteinopathies, neural stem cell therapies, repurposed therapeutics for neurodegeneration, and mechanisms of cognitive resilience. Current projects examine tau oligomer propagation, photobiomodulation effects on neurogenesis, and sub-immunosuppressive tacrolimus for amyloid pathology.

Leadership & Funding: Directs UTMB's Brain Health Institute overseeing interdisciplinary neuroscience research. Maintains continuous NIH funding since 2000 with over $42M in research grants including active R01 awards on selective vulnerability to tau spreading (R21AG089708) and synaptic resilience mechanisms (R01AG073133).
