Milcah Bassel is a multidisciplinary artist and Part-Time Lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University. Her work explores the intersection of the body, cultural systems, and participatory engagement through installation, performance, and papermaking. She holds an MFA from Rutgers University and a Post-Baccalaureate in Studio Art from Brandeis University. Bassel’s research focuses on the phenomenological body and its navigation of societal structures. Her projects like Continua (2021–2024) collapse body, architecture, and landscape into porous paper skins. She has exhibited widely, including at the Rubin Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and international venues. Awards include the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship and residencies at the Brodsky Center and Haystack Mountain School. In teaching, she specializes in papermaking and sculpture, instructing at SMFA, Rutgers, and Purchase College. Her collaborative projects, such as Summer Pour , emphasize community-driven art practices. Bassel’s work often invites viewer participation, blending material innovation with conceptual rigor.
