Jessica Meyer is an Assistant Professor in the Earth & Environmental Science Department at the University of Iowa, specializing in hydrogeology with a focus on characterizing groundwater flow in heterogeneous geologic materials including glacial sediments and fractured bedrock. Her research addresses critical environmental challenges through collaborative projects on contaminant transport, natural attenuation strategies, and groundwater-surface water interactions. Her educational background includes: PhD from the University of Guelph MS from the University of Waterloo BS from the University of Montana Dr. Meyer's research centers on hydrogeologic unit delineation to improve groundwater flow predictions and contaminant transport modeling. She develops quantitative methods for characterizing heterogeneous systems, studies nutrient and pesticide pollution in agricultural settings, and investigates water-solute exchanges between groundwater and surface water. Her work emphasizes field-based approaches to understand complex hydrostratigraphic controls in glacial deposits and fractured rock. Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent innovation in high-resolution monitoring techniques, particularly vertical gradient measurements and multilevel systems for characterizing heterogeneous media. Her research spans fractured bedrock aquifers, glaciogenic sediments, and contaminated sites, with growing emphasis on radionuclide behavior in hydrocarbon plumes and iron cycling in ferruginous systems. Dr. Meyer teaches Fundamentals of Environmental Science (EES 1085), Hydrogeology (EES 4630), and Contaminant Hydrogeology (EES 4640). She developed the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory (APLL) teaching infrastructure, including monitoring wells and multilevel systems, to support experiential learning across campus environmental science programs. She leads the Hydrogeology Research Group and utilizes university facilities including the Ashton Prairie Living Laboratory, Hydrogeology Lab, and Lab for Observing & Quantifying Aquatic & Terrestrial Ecosystems (LOQATE) for field and laboratory investigations of groundwater systems.
