Thomas Weber is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of New Hampshire, affiliated with the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM). He earned his Ph.D. in Acoustics from The Pennsylvania State University (2006) and holds B.S./M.S. degrees in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Weber joined CCOM in 2006 and the Mechanical Engineering faculty in 2012.
Research Focus: His work centers on underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography, with emphasis on:
- Acoustic propagation/scattering in gas-bearing fluids
- High-resolution seafloor characterization
- Fisheries science applications of acoustics
- Broadband sonar system development
- Quantification of oceanic methane fluxes
Publication Trends (2021-2024): Recent articles demonstrate Weber's focus on developing acoustic methodologies for monitoring marine gas seeps, modeling ocean stratification interfaces, and advancing sonar-based detection systems. His work integrates field experiments, theoretical modeling, and instrument development to study seafloor dynamics, bubble transport, and oceanographic phenomena.
Affiliations & Labs: Dr. Weber conducts research through UNH's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, which specializes in marine geophysics and acoustic remote sensing technologies. His projects include international collaborations like the Quantitative Ocean-Column Imaging (QUOI) voyage to New Zealand.
