John M. Regan is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Penn State University, affiliated with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the COE Environmental Institute, the Hydrogen Energy (H2E) Center, and the Center for Environmental geoChemistry and Genomics (CECG) as an advisory board member. He received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001), M.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1992), and B.S. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Cornell University (1990).
His research focuses on biological processes in environmental systems, particularly nutrient removal, regrowth in drinking water distribution, fermentative hydrogen production, microbial fuel cells, methanogenic systems, and molecular microbial ecology. These studies aim to harness microbial activity for energy generation, water treatment, and pollution mitigation.
His publications highlight advancements in microbial fuel cell technology for bioenergy production, biofilm characterization, and nitrogen removal mechanisms. Key themes include exoelectrogenic bacteria, anode-cathode interactions, and bioelectrochemical system optimization. His work bridges environmental engineering, microbiology, and electrochemistry.
