Michael Baldwin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati, within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on catalysis, spectroscopy, bioinorganic chemistry, and oxygen activation, with a particular emphasis on transition metal complexes and photochemical reactions. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Seattle University (1986) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University (1992), where he studied under Edward Solomon. Before joining the University of Cincinnati faculty in 1997, he was a NIH postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan with Vincent Pecoraro. His work explores molecular models of biological systems, including oxygen transport proteins and enzymes. Key areas include designing light-responsive chelates for metal binding/release and investigating catalytic mechanisms involving nickel and manganese complexes. He has secured grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the University Research Council. Notable projects include studies on oxygen activation by nickel and manganese systems, and the development of bioinspired agents for metal delivery. Baldwin has served as a graduate program director and committee chair, contributing to academic governance. His teaching spans inorganic chemistry, spectroscopy, and scientific writing at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has presented widely at conferences, including the Gordon Research Conferences on Metals in Biology and regional ACS meetings.
