Gary P. Drobny is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (1982). His research focuses on biophysical chemistry, particularly the structural and dynamic interactions of biomineralization peptides with mineral surfaces and protein-nucleic acid recognition mechanisms. He uses solid-state NMR (SSNMR) as a primary technique, complemented by computational and synthetic methods.
Dr. Drobny’s work includes studies on biosilica formation by diatom-inspired peptides, dynamics of RNA and DNA in complexes with proteins, and molecular recognition at protein-mineral interfaces. His research group has contributed to understanding the role of dynamics in biomolecular systems, such as HIV-1 TAR RNA and statherin interactions with hydroxyapatite. He collaborates across disciplines, integrating NMR spectroscopy with X-ray techniques and computational modeling.
His research has led to advancements in biomaterials, nanotechnology, and structural biology. Key contributions include methodologies for studying biomolecular dynamics in solid-state systems and insights into biomineralization processes.
