Frank McDermott is a Full Professor in the School of Earth Sciences at University College Dublin. He has held roles such as Head of School (2007–2011, 2015–2018) and Director of the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry (2021–present). His research focuses on aqueous geochemistry, mineral weathering, palaeoclimatology, and climate-energy interactions. Education: PhD from the Open University. Professional memberships include the American Geophysical Union and Royal Irish Academy (MRIA since 2020). Research interests span carbon sequestration via enhanced weathering, speleothem-based climate proxies, and atmospheric teleconnections affecting renewable energy. Notable grants include the IRC-funded 'First Harvests' project (2024–2026). Over 260 publications address geochemical processes, climate dynamics, and environmental impacts. Teaching includes modules on Earth Sciences, advanced research techniques, and environmental geology. His work bridges geochemical field studies, lab analysis, and climate modeling to address global challenges like carbon capture and sustainable energy.
