Professor Elizabeth Beckett is an Education Specialist in the Adelaide Education Academy and Professor in the School of Biomedicine at the University of Adelaide. She coordinates Physiology IIB: Systems & Homeostasis and co-coordinates Principles of Human Health and Disease, while serving as convenor of the Medical Sciences Major within the Bachelor of Health & Medical Science program. As Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), she investigates pedagogical approaches including discovery learning and digital resource efficacy in health science education. Her physiological research examines autonomic regulation and pacemaking activities in visceral smooth muscles, particularly in gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. She investigates neuro-immune axis involvement in endometriosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and colitis pathophysiology. Using murine models, her laboratory explores smooth muscle electrophysiology, pelvic pain mechanisms, and uterine motility patterns. Professor Beckett has significantly contributed to physiology education research, leading studies on core concept consensus, virtual laboratory efficacy, and pandemic-induced transitions to remote teaching. Her interdisciplinary work connects fundamental physiology with clinical applications in women's health and gastrointestinal disorders.
