Shannon Barwick serves as an Assistant Professor at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia with dual appointments in the Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She teaches foundational medical courses including Human Gross Anatomy (CAHS 7400), Cardiopulmonary/Heme (MEDI 6220), and Integrative Science (MEDI 5005), and holds active roles in curriculum development and student mentoring. Education: Ph.D. in Cell/Cellular Biology and Anatomy, Augusta University (2022) B.S. in Biochemistry, Converse College (2017) Anatomy Training Program Certificates (Neuroanatomy, Trunk, Head/Neck, Limbs), AAA and Anatomical Society (2023-2024) Certificate in Inclusive Excellence Program, Office of Diversity and Inclusion Future Faculty Learning Community Certificate (2023) Research Focus: Dr. Barwick's work centers on retinal structure-function relationships, investigating metabolic disorders like hyperhomocysteinemia in mouse models and molecular mechanisms involving Sigma 1 Receptor/NRF2 pathways in photoreceptor cells. Her medical education research emphasizes inclusive teaching practices and anatomy curriculum innovation, supported by her Certificate in Inclusive Excellence and active participation in faculty development programs. Scholarly Trends: Her publications reveal a concentrated focus on retinal pathophysiology using transgenic models, with strong connections between metabolic biochemistry and visual neuroscience. The work bridges cellular biology with clinical ophthalmology, particularly examining oxidative stress pathways in degenerative eye conditions through molecular localization studies and functional assessments. Honors: AY2023/24 Exemplary Teaching Award, MCG Office of Academic Affairs Mentoring & Service: As Faculty Mentor and OBGYN Anatomy Clinical Readiness Elective Co-Course Director, she guides medical students while serving on critical committees including the Pre-Clerkship Committee, 3MT Planning Committee, and MCG Admission Interview panel. Her departmental service includes chairing the CBA Anatomy Chair Search and participating in the Vision Discovery Institute. Research Affiliation: Dr. Barwick coordinates data sessions for the Vision Discovery Institute Retreat, connecting her retinal research with Augusta University's broader vision science initiatives through this interdisciplinary research consortium.
