Alexandru D. Ionescu is a Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, where he has held this position since 2010. Previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2002-2010) and a C.L.E. Moore Instructor at MIT (1999-2002). He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (1999), an M.A. from Princeton (1997), a B.S. from MIT (1995), and studied at the University of Bucharest (1991-1993). His research focuses on partial differential equations (PDEs) arising in fluid dynamics, mathematical physics, and geometric analysis. Key areas include nonlinear stability of fluid flows, global regularity for water waves, and wave turbulence theory. He investigates systems like the Navier-Stokes, Euler, Vlasov-Poisson, and SQG equations, examining phenomena such as inviscid damping, singularity formation, and turbulence propagation. Ionescu has received prestigious awards including the Packard Fellowship (2004-2011), Sloan Fellowship (2003-2005), and Romnes Award (2008-2011). He leads NSF-funded collaborations on fluid dynamics and computer-assisted proofs, involving institutions like NYU, Brown, and Stanford. His work bridges theoretical analysis with computational methods, including applications of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). He advises graduate students such as Hyungjun Choi and Noah Stevenson and co-organizes conferences like the 2025 NSF-FRG Conference at Princeton and the NSF-UEFISCDI Summer School in Bucharest. His research spans fluid instabilities, plasma physics, and geometric flows, with over 70 peer-reviewed publications in top journals like Annals of Mathematics and Inventiones Mathematicae.
