Professor Jonathan Fraser is a faculty member in the Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, leading the Analysis Research Group. His primary affiliation is within the School of Mathematics and Statistics, where he holds a professorial position. Fraser's research focuses on fractal geometry, analysis, and their intersections with geometric measure theory, Fourier analysis, and dynamical systems.
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of St Andrews (2013), with a thesis on self-affine fractals. He has supervised multiple PhD students, including Ana de Orellana, Tianyi Feng, Yunlong Xu, and Lijian Yang.
Fraser's research interests span fractal projections, self-affine sets, Fourier analysis of fractals, and Kakeya-type problems. He has contributed to understanding the dimension theory of fractals via Assouad spectra and intermediate dimensions, with applications to conformal dynamics and additive combinatorics.
His awards include the 2024 Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the 2023 Sir Edmund Whittaker Memorial Prize, and the 2022 RSE/Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane Medal. He is an editor for the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Journal of Fractal Geometry.
Fraser's work often bridges pure mathematics and stochastic processes, with recent focus on Fourier analytic techniques and dimension interpolation. He leads research projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust and EPSRC, exploring topics like fractal projections and conformal geometry.
In addition to academic leadership, Fraser collaborates widely, organizing seminars such as the One World Fractals series. He is actively mentoring new researchers and has upcoming initiatives for PhD and postdoctoral positions in fractal geometry.
