Paul J. Galardy, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His academic training includes: M.D. and Sc.D. from Boston University School of Medicine (1997) Residency and Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital (2000) Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute (2004) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship under Hidde Ploegh at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research Dr. Galardy's research program investigates the ubiquitin-proteasome system in cancer pathogenesis, with dual focus on UCH-L1 in B-cell malignancies (including Burkitt lymphoma) and USP44 in chromosome segregation. His laboratory demonstrated UCH-L1's oncogenic role in driving B-cell cancers and lung tumors using transgenic models, while establishing USP44 as a critical tumor suppressor whose loss causes aneuploidy and increased cancer susceptibility, particularly in lung adenocarcinoma. His team employs RNA interference, protein biochemistry, live-cell imaging, and genetically engineered mouse models to elucidate de-ubiquitinating enzyme mechanisms and therapeutic potential. His research is funded by the National Cancer Institute, American Society of Hematology, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and other organizations seeking novel childhood cancer therapies that improve cure rates while reducing treatment toxicities. Scientific recognition includes: Physician Scientist Early Career Award, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2007) Basic Science Faculty Scholar, American Society of Hematology (2007) Best Poster Award at Third International Symposium on Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (2009) Dana-Farber Harvard Cancer Institute Fellowships (2005) HHMI/NIH Research Scholar (1993) Dr. Galardy maintains active clinical practice in pediatric hematology/oncology specializing in leukemia and lymphoma. He leads the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and contributes to the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and Children's Research Center, where his laboratory operates within the Cancer Cell Genomics, Signalling, and Metastasis Program.
