Bjarne Foss is a Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Managing Director of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience. He has been a professor since 1989 and holds a PhD in Engineering Cybernetics from NTNU. His roles include Vice President for Research at NTNU (2017–2020) and Adjunct Professor at the University of South-East Norway (2021–2023). He has extensive board experience with companies like Cybernetica AS, Solution Seeker AS, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Foss specializes in process control, reservoir management, and optimization algorithms, with over 300 publications and an H-index of 49. He has supervised 31 PhD students and led major international projects for ESA and EU. Awards include the IBM Open Collaborative Faculty Award (2010, 2011), the Karl Diesel Best Paper Award (1995), and recognition for pedagogical innovation in 2007. His research focuses on enhancing oil production efficiency, automation in energy systems, and control strategies for complex industrial processes. His education includes a PhD from NTNU (Engineering Cybernetics) and an MSc degree awarded with the prestigious «Innstilling» honor. Professional activities include editorial roles, IEEE Senior Membership, and leadership in international committees like IFAC. Foss co-founded Solution Seeker AS (2013), Cybernetica AS (2000), and FIRST Scandinavia (2000). Recent work emphasizes distributed optimization for large-scale oil systems, dynamic control under uncertainty, and shale-gas production strategies. His publications span journals like IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering , addressing challenges in reservoir control, model predictive control, and well-placement optimization.
