Her research directly contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental sustainability. Her work bridges scientific research with policy applications, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to complex climate challenges. Thoni's recent publications demonstrate an evolving research trajectory from climate governance mechanisms to practical implementation of carbon removal technologies, particularly in the German context. Her work frequently appears in high-impact environmental journals and shows strong collaborative networks across European research institutions. As an active academic contributor, Thoni organizes numerous workshops and seminars through the Teaching for Sustainability initiative, including megagames for large-scale social simulations and discussion webinars connecting global sustainability perspectives. She leads significant research projects including 'TfS: Teaching for Sustainability' (active since 2023) and the 'Excellence Programme for Sustainable Development' (2021-2027), building on her earlier work on biodiversity offsetting policies and her dissertation research on the role of science in international climate change negotiations.
